This answer depends on the state. Since Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are trained to be primary care providers (PCPs) they are trained to prescribe and manage the majority of prescription medications that the general population is taking. There are many states where NDs are permitted to prescribe the majority of medications. However, currently, Maryland is not one of those states. Thus, Dr. Stewart will not be able to prescribe any medications for her patients. She will work closely with your PCP if it is determined that a prescription medication would be of value to bring on board. Dr. Stewart is passionate about expanding the scope of practice for NDs in Maryland so that they are free to practice in accordance with what they have been trained to do. Seems like a reasonable request, right? To stay up to date and/or support ongoing efforts of Naturopathic Doctors in the state of Maryland, visit https://www.marylandnd.org/.
